Successful products are based on solid marketing plans. Without a marketing plan, you waste time, money, and most importantly, missed opportunities. If you have a good product, you deserve to have an equally good marketing plan.

My Process to Create a Marketing Plan


I've developed a structured process to create a profitable marketing plan. The process is flexible to accommodate the special needs of clients and new products.

The steps I use to create a marketing plan are:

  1. Conduct a Prepared Interview with you the Client – Gather information covering your goals, objectives, product details, and the market.

  2. Market Research – With an understanding of your needs, I perform research. The key indicators I'm looking for are industry trends, market success factors, competition, opportunities, customer demographics, customer behavior, and the product characteristics important to your customers.

  3. Create Plan – With the knowledge gained from research, the marketing plan begins (see contents below).

  4. Review With Client – Along the way, I often have questions for the client. Interaction is a key element to make sure you receive what you paid for. When the marketing plan is completed, we will review the document and I'll answer your questions.

  5. Implementation – The marketing plan is laid out in phases so you can complete the action items in an orderly manner. You can hire me to carry out the actions, hire others, or do them yourself. My goal is to empower you to learn and grow. At the same time, I'll provide you with resources for additional assistance as needed.


My Marketing Plan Contents


There is no one standard marketing plan format. However, I've found that by researching and analyzing certain topics, provides a solid foundation and leads to successful strategies to generate product sales.

While each marketing plan I create is customized, your marketing plan is likely to cover:

  • Industry – The current activities and trends related to your product's market.

  • Market Data – Statistics and data related to your market, competition, and customers.

  • Market Success Factors – The specific industry norms and customer expectations.

  • Opportunities – Any current and future openings in the market for your product.

  • Threats – Factors to take notice, avoid, and monitor including the competition, government actions, and technology trends.

  • Competition – Analysis of comparable products.

  • Customer – Your customer's demographics, psychographics, and buying behavior.

  • Influencers – The understanding of how certain people influence your customer's buying decision.

  • Product Characteristics – Uncovering the important product benefits, features, and functions sought by customers.

  • Strategies – Based on your current situation, the strategies (product, pricing, marketing communications, distribution, partnerships) to meet your goals and objectives.

  • Tactics – The actions to achieve the strategies (methods to generate awareness, interest, sales, and re-purchase).

FAQ


How long does it take to create a marketing plan?
– It can take one to two months to research, analyze, develop strategies and tactics, and write the marketing plan.

Who creates the marketing plan?
- I personally perform research and write the marketing plan. In certain cases I have assistants gather market research data.

Is the marketing plan based on a software template?
- No software templates are used. Each marketing plan is customized to the client's requirements.

What is outcome of the marketing plan?
- The marketing plan I create is a practical guide to generating profit from your product. No theories, just factual data, analysis, and well thought-out strategies and tactics. You'll use the marketing plan to run your business. The plan can also be used as the marketing section of a business plan.

Once a marketing plan is finished, then what?
- I'll review the plan with you from the research uncovered to the strategies and tactics. The plan is laid out in phases for actions to be completed. You can hire people to perform the actions, outsource to others, or have me take on the projects. At a minimum I can be your advisor and guide you through the process of working your plan.
