How to Get a Prototype Made

Getting a prototype made is much easier today. With rapid prototyping methods and CNC machines, just about anything that can be displayed on a computer screen can be made into something real.

Having a finished prototype puts you above the rest who have just an idea. Your prototype will be the key to impress companies to take on your idea, and to prove your concept works.

Today, the most technically advanced method to create a prototype is known as Rapid Prototyping (RP). With an RP machine, a prototype can be produced in a matter of hours.

RP was invented in 1988 with the introduction of Stereolithography by 3D Systems of Valencia, California. Rapid Prototyping machines literally create an object out of liquid resin, powder, or sheets of laminated paper.

The following are the leading methods used in Rapid Prototyping:

  • Stereolithography Apparatus (SLA) – A process based on the use of photopolymer liquid resins that solidify when exposed to ultraviolet light. (more details in the eBook below)
  • Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) – A process that creates solid three-dimensional objects, layer by layer, from plastic, metal, or ceramic powders that are "sintered" or fused using carbon-dioxide laser energy.
  • Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) – A process that creates successive cross-sections of a three-dimensional object from threads of plastic or casting wax.
  • Laminated Object Manufacturing (LOM) – A process that creates a three-dimensional object from layers of paper with a polyethylene coating on the backside. (more details in the eBook below)
  • 3D Printing – A process that creates a three-dimensional object using powder material. A type of ink-jet printing head selectively deposits or "prints" a binder fluid to fuse powder in designated areas.

To make it easy, a new guidebook Getting Your Prototype Made Quick and Easy provides you with the answers, steps, and tips to prototyping.

Based on 24 years of experience, the easy to read guidebook takes you through the important step-by-step procedures.

I've condensed the information down to just the important step-by-step procedures, examples, and checklists.

You'll discover:

Prototype Step-by-Step Process
The step-by-step procedures to get a prototype designed and produced.
Free and Low-Cost Resources
Where to get a prototype made, how to work with prototype makers, how to avoid the pitfalls many inventors make, and how to save money in the process.
Working with a Prototype Maker
The steps an engineer takes to produce a prototype and what you need to know to work with them to get the job done right.
Rapid Prototyping
How to take advantage of rapid prototyping technologies (SLA, SLS, FDM, LOM, 3DP).
Prototype Design
How to determine the best design that's right for you and for your future customers.
Demonstration
